Cashback and Football

Cashback and football— a winning team for 10 yrs

Cabinet Secretary for Justice Michael Matheson visited Craigroyston Community High School in Edinburgh to see first-hand the positive effects the CashBack for Communities funded Scottish Football Association’s Schools of Football training is having on its young participants. The Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme funds free activities and programmes for young people across Scotland. It was introduced to improve young people’s self confidence and self esteem, and support communities, particularly those most affected by crime and anti-social behaviour. 2018 marks 10 years of the CashBack for Communities fund addressing disadvantage in communities throughout Scotland. The programme is now in its fourth phase with £17m of funding committed between 2017 and 2020.

SCRAN at JCI Edinburgh

SCRAN Pupils are the charity of the year for JCI Edinburgh

Five of our pupils joined staff at the SCRAN table for the JCI burns night. SCRAN was chosen as the JCI charity of the year and we had the opportunity to speak, donate a hamper and supply all who attended with tablet and macaroons. The pupils took to the stage to speak about their time in SCRAN, their journey and how it had changed them, there wasn’t a dry eye in the place! The pupils were truly inspirational and afterwards they had everyone coming to speak with them. Congratulations to the SCRAN crew!

Lego Competition

Lego Competition

On Saturday seven S1-S3 pupils from our Lego club took part in the FIRST Lego League competition at the University of Edinburgh. While we didn’t win we had a great day and had lots of fun.

There were three elements to the competition – a presentation (they all did well presenting to strangers), being assessed on core values (such as team work) and competing against other teams to get their robot to complete a series of challenges. Congratulations to our students!

Edinburgh Council & Edinburgh Leisure

Edinburgh Council & Edinburgh Leisure

The City of Edinburgh Council have recently asked Edinburgh Leisure to process block bookings for sports clubs at all High Schools. This is a separate piece of work to the ongoing conversations about ‘operational transfer’ of High School sports facilities to Edinburgh Leisure to operate community time (after 6.00pm weekdays, weekends and holiday periods).
Accordingly, if you are a sports club, group or organisation and wish to make a block booking of a high school sport facility, please contact schoolbookings@edinburghleisure.co.uk or call 0131 458 2212.

Edinburgh International Guitar Festival 2017

Edinburgh International Guitar Festival 2017

Jakob (S4) shown here performing in a workshop (or masterclass) to the internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Gary Ryan.

Gary is professor of guitar at the Royal College of Music and is currently on tour with John Williams as well as performing solo recitals.

Jakob played really well and was a credit to our school over the course of the weekend. I am sure he has gained a huge amount of confidence as well as musical development from this experience.

Armed Forces Reserve Day 2017 – Wednesday 21st 2017

Armed Forces Reserve Day 2017 – Wednesday 21st 2017
The Reserve Forces make up approximately one sixth of our Armed Forces personnel and as such are integral to protecting the nation’s security at home and overseas.
Reservists are currently supporting operations worldwide including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bahrain, Estonia, South Sudan, Cyprus and Somalia.
However, the contribution they make to our Armed Forces often goes unrecognised. As such annual Reserves Day was created to highlight and recognise the valuable contribution Reservists make to our Armed Forces.

Reservists are everywhere, but you might not know it. So on Reserves Day, our Reservists wear their uniform in their civilian life in order to raise the profile of Reserve Forces. Today is a day for employers and colleagues to recognises our Reservists across the UK for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to serving our country.

Chris is both a teacher and a member of our Armed Forces.
There is no doubt that the two roles complement one another very well and I know from personal experience that the training given by the Armed Forces is second to none.
We are fortunate to have Chris on our staff team with the additional experience that being a Reservist brings.
As Head Teacher, I’m very proud to be able to support Chris in his role as a Reservist with the Royal Navy.

Pictured above are Chris (Royal Navy Reservist), and Stephen (Headteacher).

“As a Royal Navy Reservist I have developed a range of skills that have allowed me to become a better classroom teacher”.

“Leadership, problem solving and team work are just some of the qualities that my Reserve training has allowed me to develop. Not to mention the additional qualifications available for me to work towards and bring to my school. For example, first aid qualifications, expedition and outdoor leadership awards and various vehicle driving licenses”

“Finally, it gives me something exciting to tell the pupils on a Monday morning after a weekend away”

Chris (Royal Navy Reservist and Teacher of Geography)
