Terry Pearson makes his mark at this year’s Edinburgh International Film festival Schools Competition

Summer time is here which marks the beginning of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF.) Thousands of tourists and film lovers are gathering to the premieres of Disney’s latest animated feature ‘Finding Dory’ or the newly HD restored version of ‘Highlander’. But did you know that every year EIFF organises screening of Scottish schools best film making work?

Just like professional productions, Students’ films go through a rigorous selection process before being shortlisted for the competition. That the young jury selected Terry’s film ‘Cutting Cards’ for this year’s competition is already a great success. But things got even better! Terry is now the proud recipient of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival Schools Competition award for ‘Best Composition’.

This year, Terry has been studying film making with Screen Education Edinburgh (SEE.) In fact, SEE has offered to four of our senior students the fantastic opportunity to work with them towards a GCSE qualification in Moving Image Arts. As part of their qualification students have learned how to operate professional filming equipment, created a short film and studied film analysis.

They’ve worked hard with their tutor Neil Rowland and they all created a short film that was submitted to the competition.

Terry’s short film narrates a card game using classic Western frame composition and mise-en-scene. This really impressed the young jury who gave Terry the prize for ‘Best Composition’.

“ I am very pleased that all my hard work has paid off.”, says Terry. “I would really like to get another opportunity to direct a short film. This has been a great experience.”

We are all looking forward to your next production Terry!
