English & Literacy

English & Literacy

In English, we strive to ensure that all pupils are given the tools to advance their literacy skills and achieve their full potential. This ranges from National 3 through to Higher and Advanced Higher levels in English and ESOL. There is a qualification to achieve for every child in our department.

S1-S3
During the BGE years, students study a wide and exciting range of topics that allow them to achieve the levels within the Curriculum for Excellence. They will be immersed literature including; novels, drama, poetry and works of non-fiction. We actively work to encourage a love of reading. All S1 classes are given a reading period in which they spend time in the library reading books that they choose themselves. They will have the opportunity to stretch their imagination with creative tasks and gain key skills that ensure that they reach their full potential in the Senior Phase.

S4-S6
When students reach the senior phase, students will be working towards gaining a qualification in English, ESOL, Media, Journalism or Scottish Studies. Students are fully supported while studying a range of texts and guided through the assessment process. We offer a variety of study support clubs to make sure that every student leaves the department having achieved the best qualification that they can.
