Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) is the Scottish Government’s Youth Employment strategy to better prepare young people for the world of work.
The employer-led Developing the Young Workforce Regional Groups set up across Scotland are connecting employers with education.
Your school now has a dedicated DYW School Co-ordinator who will work alongside the entire school team and other partners to build strong and lasting relationships between the school and employers.
These links will provide the opportunity for young people to learn more about the world of work directly from industry experts. Their knowledge of the breadth of jobs available will increase, as will their understanding of the types of skills that are relevant to and sought-after by employers.

DYW form a vital link between Young People, Industry and Educators.
As young people progress through secondary school they will learn about the various further education,
employment and apprenticeship pathways available to them.

While jobs in all sectors will continue to become available as people switch jobs,
relocate or retire, these industries will experience growth between now and 2027.
That means that more jobs are being created in these sectors.
Digital technology, computing and IT skills will be in demand across all these sectors in our increasingly
inter-connected, cloud-based working world.

There are jobs available in all these sectors in all of the qualification levels.
That means young people can join these sectors with any qualifications.
The opportunities exist for progression within each sector by apprenticeships, training courses and gaining experience.

Developing the Young Workforce means educating our young people about the types of skills that are transferable between jobs.
These transferable skills (also called core skills, or soft skills) are highly valued by employers and often their selection processes focus heavily on them.
We help young people identify the skills they already have, and how to identify those they need for their future careers.
